MODEL HISTORY & PRODUCTION
The 458 Spider is the first car ever to combine a mid-rear engine with a retractable folding hard top. It delivers both unprecedented in-cabin comfort when closed and unparalleled Spider performance.
Cabin space and comfort are improved thanks to the roof’s double curvature, an element made possible by its aluminium construction but impossible to achieve with a traditional canvas soft top. However its incredible compactness when opened is vital in retaining its aerodynamics and styling. Open top driving is an absolute uniquely, exhilarating experience with correct air distribution and a cleverly installed electric wind stop.
A naturally aspirated V8 engine with a displacement of 4,497cc produces 570cv maximum power at 9,000 rpm with a 3.4s 0-62 and 199 mph top speed, a fraction slower than the 458 Italia, ensuring no performance loss. Smooth shift without loss of torque is aided by the 7 Gear F1 Dual Clutch Transmission. Electronic controls include E-DIFF3, F1-TRAC (Sport-Race). This evolution means that torque distribution coming out of bends is better than in previous models, resulting in improved traction, higher longitudinal acceleration values and better dynamics.
The 458 Spider retains the 458 Italia’s focus on ensuring the driver feels at the very centre of the car with a Formula 1 cockpit-style driver layout. The interior is simple and there is plenty of luggage stowage space in the front boot and the rear bench can be used to stow a regular-sized golf bag, even one containing longer golf clubs. Bespoke luggage can be catered for as an optional extra. The main air intake design difference between the Spider and the 458 Italia is the location. No longer at the B-pillars, it is moved back on the Spider to the rear spoiler, where the gearbox and clutch radiators are situated.
The 458 Spider is about 12 percent more aerodynamically efficient than the F430 Spider. Carefully tested and designed with features which aid downforce as speed rises. It’s as aerodynamically efficient as the 458 Italia. Braking is much improved with a collaboration with Bosch, the evolution of the Ferrari Pre-Fill logic ABS system to reduce response times in medium-high grip situations and the integration of E-DIFF3 and ABS control logics to guarantee both more precise vehicle speed in braking, aided by Carbon-ceramic material brakes that require minimal maintenance.
