MODEL HISTORY & PRODUCTION
The Jaguar Mk2 introduced in 1959 was the epitome of Sir William Lyons’ advertising slogan from the period ‘grace, space and pace’ Available with a choice of 2.4, 3.4, and 3.8-litre XK engines, the latter was capable of 0-60 mph in 8.5 seconds and a top speed of 125 mph - very impressive figures for a luxury saloon of such proportions.
The Mk2 replaced the Mk1 from 1956, with many improvements, but most notably offering better all-round visibility with larger windows, a reworked dash, independent front suspension and impressive Dunlop disc brakes.
Arguably one of the finest driving luxury saloons from the 1960s, the Mk2 is now one of the most recognisable cars from the period, mainly because of its numerous appearances in film and TV, more often than not as the bank robber’s favourite - thanks to its pace and agile driving dynamics.
There was no direct replacement for the Mk2, as the more refined S-Type appeared in 1963 with production running concurrently with the Mk2 until it was discontinued in 1967. Eventually, the iconic XJ6 made its debut in 1968.
THIS VEHICLE
A re-engineered, upgraded version of the original Mk2, recreated by the Vicarage Classic Car Company in 1989 at a cost of £43,557. In addition to the standard Vicarage specification, upgrades included an oil cooler, Kenlowe electric cooling fan, XJ-S type rack-and-pinion steering with power assistance, improved suspension, electric sunroof, air conditioning, electric windows, central locking; Daimler Vanden Plas front seats, and fully trimmed luggage compartment.
In 2008, it was fitted with a five-speed Getrag manual gearbox by marque specialists Classic Motor Cars Ltd of Bridgnorth, Shropshire.
This extensively upgraded and very desirable ‘modern classic’. will represent a good acquisition opportunity for a collector, investor or first-time classic car buyer. It’s available for viewing in the UK near Stansted Airport on an appointment basis.
