MODEL HISTORY & PRODUCTION: MERCEDES-BENZ 300S
The launch of a unique post war model from Mercedes-Benz, the 300 series, was introduced at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 1951. This was the marque's first postwar automobile & was designed specifically for the export market, particularly the United States. A flagship model, the 300 was very attractive, with a modern windscreen, side windows, flush mounted headlights, graceful fender lines and a curved rear bodyline with a hint of side running boards to provide for an elegant and modern finish below the doors. The comprehensive list of standard equipment included a signal seeking radio, no glare mirrors, vacuum assisted brakes, backup lights, reclining seats and windshield washers.

The 300 and its various iterations remained in production for 11 years, a testament to the soundness of its concept and execution. In line with the 300 Sedan / Saloon body the 25 cm shorter chassis introduced three sporty bodies Coupe, Cabriolet & Roadsters which were built over a 7 year period. It was the most expensive luxury car of its day, twice as much as the 300SL and American luxury cars of the day. Equally important, it was the model that returned Mercedes-Benz to its prewar international clientele. Hence this was a car of the rich and famous including the Aga Kahn, the Shah of Iran, King Gustav of Sewden, Frank Lloyd Wright, Gary Cooper, Yul Brenner, Maria Callas, Clark Gable & Bing Crosby.

The 300S, or "Super" model was introduced in mid 1952 and combined elements of the existing 300 series with the upcoming but delayed 300SL sports car. The most noticeable enhancement included a 30 percent increase in horsepower, from 115 BHP to 150 BHP. Praised by the motoring press and inarguably one of the best luxury touring cars available in the 1950's. Road & Track magazine described it, "Where the Mercedes-Benz 300S has been since its first appearance it has caused a quiet riot of enthusiasm & its attitude of 'going' even when it's standing still".
