MODEL HISTORY & PRODUCTION
Manufactured between 1975 and 1989, with over 21,000 produced, the 930 was born out of the need for Porsche to comply with homologation regulations in order to compete in FIA competition in the mid 70s.
Marketed simply as the 911 Turbo, the 930 quickly became very popular with driving enthusiasts, and has the honour of being the model which started Porsche’s Turbocharged legacy. Originally available with 260 PS (191 kW; 256 hp) at 5,500 rpm, in 1978 the displacement was increased to 3,299 cc, and with the addition of an intercooler, the power was increased to 300 PS (221 kW; 296 hp).
The 930 is perhaps the most iconic and recognisable variant of all the Turbo incarnations. The ‘whale tail’ rear spoiler vented more air to the engine and created more rear end downforce, and the wider rear wheels with upgraded tyres combined with flared wheel arches increased the width and grip, making it more stable.
In 1990, the 930 production run came to an end and was officially replaced with the 964.
