MODEL HISTORY & PRODUCTION
With its name coming from the French word for a coastal road, the Rolls-Royce Corniche was a development of the Mulliner Park Ward 2-door versions of the Silver Shadow. The Corniche name was introduced in 1971 with production remaining at the Mulliner Park Ward facility in London, where in addition to the Corniche, other bespoke bodies were manufactured for Rolls-Royce.
Powered by the standard 6.75 litre V8, with 3-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel independent hydraulic self-leveling suspension, the Corniche was available as a coupe or convertible. At its launch it was listed as one of the world’s most expensive cars – at some £13,000 it was four times the price of a Jaguar E-Type.
As the Corniche was developed in subsequent years, many model variants followed and its production moved to the Rolls-Royce plant in Crewe, Cheshire. Between 1984 and 1995 a Bentley version was launched and marketed as the Continental – with some fettling it was in essence the same vehicle, rebadged.
The final incarnation came in 2000 as the Corniche V, although still powered by essentially the same 6.75 litre V8, it was now turbocharged. Production ran to 2002 when Rolls-Royce production of this era came to an end, as the whole Crewe plant was turned over to the manufacture of Bentleys after they became a subsidiary of Volkswagen AG.
THIS ACTUAL CAR
First registered in July 1972, with its coachwork by Mulliner Park Ward, and an interior finished with Wilton carpeting, Magnolia Connolly leather and trimmed with Burr Walnut Veener, this Rolls-Royce Corniche was built with the best traditions of British craftsmanship and still presents in fine condition.
Complete with an extensive history file suggesting the odometer reading of 31,044 is genuine, there is also evidence of some previous notable owners, together with service records, various ephemeral items and an interesting collection of 8-Track tapes.
